A step in the right direction [ February 23rd, 2010 ] Posted in » Gadgets, Good Ideas, Things To Buy

Here’s something real cool. But before I tell you what it is, let me ask you: how many devices do you have that get charged through a USB port? I thought so. Almost everyone today has one device or more which use USB to charge. And yet, we don’t have the ability to charge directly from the wall without using a special adapter.

Well, that is changing. Take a look at the following picture:

usb wall

Yup, it’s a wall socket with two USB ports built-in. And this device is a near reality and is currently pre-ordering for less than $20.00. Here’s the link to the manufacturer’s site which explains the specifications and gives some more information about the socket: http://store.fastmac.com/product_info.php?products_id=458. I love it when technology moves in the right direction.

So, would you like to take a shower on board your flight?

If the answer for this question is yes, then you are in luck. Of course, you would need to have a lot of money. Emirates has announced that it has made available two shower Spas on board their A380 planes (of course there is some time before you see these giants in the air yet). This facility is available for first class passengers. Just like a real spa, you will need to make appointments ahead of time so that your spa session can be prepared by dedicated personnel.

Personally, I think this is whacky. Although, I also think that if I had the money, I would go for it. Incidentally, I wonder if this increases the price of the first class ticket. I mean carrying so much water has got to have its cost associated with it. Here’s a picture, and you can click on it to visit the Emirates site where they have more pictures and videos of this facility:

Pencil some cool diagrams in FireFox

FireFox has always been a browser for me. Sure, it’s got a a lot of nice plug-ins which extend it’s functionality, but more often than not these plug-ins are usually enhancing my browsing experience. That was until now. In the pat 3-4 days, I have come across two ‘add-ins’ which take this to a different level altogether. One of them is called S3Fox, which is an application that lets you manage your Amazon S3 account, but it’s not a stand alone application. The other one is the one this post is all about. It’s called Pencil.

Free Screen Recording Software

When it comes to recording what is going on your screen, TechSmith is by far the leader – be it Screen Capture (through SnagIt) or Screen Recording (through Camtasia). However, these tools cost money. And since I am always trying to help people who don’t really need ALL the features of the paid software (only some) and don’t want to spend the money to pay for the software, I present two free alternatives to Camtasia (neither comes close to the feature set that Camtasia offers).

And you thought Grand Theft Auto was a game

nico-sketch As real as the graphics in GTAIV get, it is still a game. Nico Bellic is still a character in a video game and not a real life person. But that changed last month when magic-man pixeloo brought Nico to life. This guy is seriously magic with Photoshop. He created Jessica Rabbit – more beautiful in real life than ever. He worked his magic on Stewie Griffin. And now he is got one of the most popular characters of modern times to come alive.

For the (not so) artistic people out there

Picassohead2 Are you a big artist type, with art flowing through your veins? Well, this is not for you then. But are you someone who wished they could draw something sensible by putting pencil to paper, or brush to canvas? Then read on because this neat website may be able to whet your appetite a little.

Introducing Mr. Picassohead – a tool that will make Picasso’s out of us all (well, maybe not, but we can still try). This painting on the left was made using Mr. Picassohead. What Mr. P offers is a flash based editor which allows you to choose from a number of different shapes to paint with. It allows you to get as creative as you can get with a finite set of tools which offer an infinite set of combinations.

Some people have all the time in the world

Every time I something like what I am about to show you, I feel jealous. I wish I had the time, energy, money, inclination, courage, or whatever it takes to do something like this. Take a look at the video below.

His name is Matt and it took him 14 months to do this and it took him to more than 42 countries. Watch it completely, it is way too cool not to be seen completely.

Did you just receive a DOCX file?

imageWith the release of Office 2007, Microsoft introduced a new format for all it’s Office products. One such format is DOCX. And since not everyone has adopted the 2007 version, there is a mix of formats going on around the Internet and sooner or later you are bound to receive a DOCX file in your inbox. So what can you do with this file if you don’t have the program (Word 2007) to open it? As it turns out, there are loads of options that you have. In this post, I am going to list out some of these options.

Of course, the best option, if you just want to view the file, is to use the Word 2007 viewer from Microsoft. This allows you to open the DOCX file and view it. It is a free utility from Microsoft. Another option from Microsoft is available to you if you have an earlier version of Office installed (such as Office 2003). It is called the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack. This allows you to open, view, and edit Office 2007 documents in Office 2003 or Office XP. If you don’t like Microsoft, but still want to view the file that you have, there are other options, and I point out out 3 of these below:
