A step in the right direction [ February 23rd, 2010 ] Posted in » Gadgets, Good Ideas, Things To Buy

Here’s something real cool. But before I tell you what it is, let me ask you: how many devices do you have that get charged through a USB port? I thought so. Almost everyone today has one device or more which use USB to charge. And yet, we don’t have the ability to charge directly from the wall without using a special adapter.

Well, that is changing. Take a look at the following picture:

usb wall

Yup, it’s a wall socket with two USB ports built-in. And this device is a near reality and is currently pre-ordering for less than $20.00. Here’s the link to the manufacturer’s site which explains the specifications and gives some more information about the socket: http://store.fastmac.com/product_info.php?products_id=458. I love it when technology moves in the right direction.

The first ever game on YouTube

Someone went on hyperdrive in creativity (I think that is the right word for this) and used the feature of embedding links in YouTube videos to make a game on YouTube. This game is played by watching and interacting with the video.

Here’s the video below:

Here’s how you can go about freeing your hard disk space

Knowledge is power, they say. If that is true, then it follows that if you know exactly where your hard disk space is being used, then you should have the power to free it up. So, how do we get this knowledge. Enter DriveSpacio. DriveSpacio is a freeware developed by someone who couldn’t find a freeware that did the job.

Looks like LifeHacker is running out of hacks

I love LifeHacker, and should have blogged about it here (but I would imagine, almost everyone in the world knows about this site). Anyway, as a regular reader, I was deeply disappointed with one of their recent posts. Its about a ‘windows only’ screen saver which you can set to turn off your PC in a given time. Why would I even want such a thing when Windows has this built in. Just go and read the comments on this post to get an idea on how dumb everyone thinks this post is.

Since the team at LifeHacker has generally been good over the years, and I believe they are not dumb – the only conclusion for a post like this that I can derive is that they have totally run out of smart things to right about, and in desperation are posting any random stuff. Hopefully, this is a temporary phase.

TechCrunch – a good site, but poor commentators

I have always followed TechCrunch for my quota of tech news. The great thing was that it used to have a great number of people leaving very insightful comments. Like I said, ‘was’. Lately, there have been more and more shallow commenting on the site.

Google has released its own browser

Just in case you are one of those people who only read this blog (hah), I would like to inform you that Google has released its own browser. And based on my initial testing, it is something that you have to go and get. There are bunch of new features that are available with the browser, and you can read all about them at the Google Chrome page.

Be a champ at Scrabble

scrabbleIf you like to play scrabble and often find yourself stuck because you have a large number of hard to use consonants with you, here’s a page which will help you a lot. This page lists 10 words which are legal in the game, are high scoring, and are very short.

Here’s the URL: Win at Scrabble.

Remember one thing though. You should not stop at reading the article. The readers have added a larger list in the comments, making this a nice little resource for Scrabble goodness. Now, go, memorize, and then kick some butt at Scrabble.

My favorite word in that list is Cwm. Never knew that was a word. In fact, even my spell checker in this software that I am using for writing this is saying that its not a word. But, guess what, it is a word.

Happy Playing!!!

Global warming is going to happen in our lifetime

A lot of people tend to have an attitude that the effects of Global Warming are going to show up hundreds of years from now and by then we would have done something to encounter them. Well, guess what, that’s not true. Global Warming is here and now. It’s already starting altering the planet and its happening faster than anyone ever imagined.
