Google Docs vs Office Live Workspace
Microsoft announced launch of Office Live Workspace Beta and immediately there has been comparison over this service and Google Docs all over the web.
Here’s my summary from the data collected:
| Feature | Google Docs | Office Live Workspaces |
| Storage Space | 5000 documents 5000 images 1000 spreadsheets |
500 MB |
| File Types | Only those which are editable online (html, txt, doc, rtf, odf, xls, csv, tsv, ods, ppt, pps, tsb) | Any files other than those considered harmful by Windows (executables) |
| File Size Limits | 500K per doc 10 MB per ppt |
25 MB per file |
| Simultaneous Work | Multiple people can edit the same document | Only one person can edit at a given time |
| Sharing | Yes | Yes |
| Versioning | Yes | Yes |
| Multiple File Upload | Yes (through third party tools) | Yes (from IE only) |
| Operation Mode | Online only - no offline application integration | Requires Microsoft Office installed to edit |
| Mobile Access | Yes (view only) | No |
| Folders | Yes | Limited (only one level) |
| Direct Urls to documents | Yes | Yes |
For those who already have Office, Live Workspace is the obvious answer. Google Docs will only appeal to those who don’t have Office already.
